Spring Break
03/30/07 at 09:42 AM | In California | No CommentsThe last weeks have been rather busy, again. Research, course work and examinations are taking their toll. This week, however, we officially had “Spring Break”. You might have heard of crazy parties down at the Mexican beaches — but that’s almost exclusively undergraduates, and not graduate students like me. So while it has been a little less hectic this week, there was still work to be done.
This weekend, however, I’ll finally take some time off and head up to Santa Barbara, which is said to be a very nice town. We’ll stay Saturday and Sunday, and among other things the plan is to visit some of the local wineries.
I’ll have my camera with me, so you can expect some new pictures on this site soon…
“Sport ist Mord” (sport is murder)
03/04/07 at 11:23 AM | In California | 3 CommentsAfter taking a break for almost 3 weeks (because of the flu I had caught), I finally returned to the basketball courts for some workout. After just half a match (we were winning, though), my buddy Travis (on the opposing team) decided to take me out of the game. ![]()
I’m just kidding about that last part, but still, both of us going for the ball, we somehow managed to crash our heads together. For him that resulted in a small cut on his forehead, for me it meant a nice cut on my right eyebrow. Since we were playing at the UCI sports center, we went to see their first aid guy, who cleaned up the mess a little bit and told me that I’d need to be stitched up, in order to avoid an ugly scar (Travis was more lucky since his cut was smaller).
Well, so off we went to the ER of the nearby hospital. After some paperwork and a little waiting, a doctor had a look at my cut. He quickly decided that instead of stitching me up, he’d glue it with some special skin glue. No needles involved, yay!
Well, the process itself was quite undramatic, the cleaning of the wound being most ‘painful’. I guess the worst part is that I can’t do any sports for another two weeks… ![]()
Anyway, people have requested pictures over the last two months, so here you go. Not quite what you might have had in mind, but pictures after all — and don’t worry, the red stuff is the glue, not blood.
Life goes on…
03/03/07 at 02:26 PM | In California | No CommentsAnother month passed since my last post — time really flies, wow!
Among other things I’ve been in bed with a flu for a week (fever, headache, etc.), after which I had to put in a lot of work to catch up at school. The homework for the one course I’m taking is requiring more and more time, and then of course there’s always general research to be done. Just this past Friday we had a deadline for a conference submission, so you can imagine that the week was very stressful and I didn’t sleep much.
In my rare and precious free time I’ve enjoyed the Super Bowl party and watching the NBA All Star game. I’ve also been to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, listening to the Los Angeles Philarmonics — a very impressive experience.
The end of the quarter is only a few weeks away, so basically it’s almost time to prepare for the final exam of the course I’m taking. After that we have about one week of spring break here, maybe I can afford to go on a short trip…
